The MSIC complex in Ostrava-Poruba is more than just an address for the 75 companies that are based there. Above all it is a place where innovative ideas are born, and where these ideas can become a reality thanks to the synergies created by these companies’ people – who bring a wealth of experience in a wide range of professions. MSIC is a true community, helping to put innovative and talented people in touch with each other. One example of how the MSIC community works is the story of DMKey Technologies, a start-up that has benefited hugely from MSIC’s IdeaHUB development centre.
DMKey Technologies grew out of a simple idea that was born when a group of computer enthusiasts decided to try simplifying the modular structure of standard computers. They ended up developing innovative computer components which mean that people can actually build their own computers and customize them to meet their own individual needs. The inventor of the system, Dominik Uskoba, explains: “We invent new computer components which either make it simpler to build computers or radically change the way that computers are built – so people can build them in a completely different way.”
The business plan was supported by the Green Light accelerator scheme run by the Innovation Support Centre at Ostrava’s Technical University, which offers a three-month programme designed to assist selected projects. The programme is packed with workshops, mentoring sessions, and other activities helping start-ups to transform their innovative ideas into reality. To ensure that the idea progressed to generate tangible results, Uskoba’s team was given the opportunity to become part of MSIC’s community of tech firms. Their main partner in the development process was IdeaHUB, which enabled them to transform their idea into a viable prototype. Uskoba gives more details: “In the MSIC community all of us share the same enthusiasm for technology. MSIC means that we can do everything ourselves – from the initial idea to the finished product. You could say that MSIC is a dream factory – because they’ve helped us to make our dreams come true.” After 12 months of hard work on the business plan, DMKey Technologies has now produced a second prototype. The launch of series production and sales is planned for the spring of 2019.
In 2017 MSIC decided to create an on-site prototype workshop for mechanics and mechatronics. The workshop was named IdeaHUB, and it supports its clients’ development projects from the prototype design stage to the finished product. IdeaHUB design specialist Lukáš Jančar explains: “We have a full range of technical equipment, enabling us to take care of our clients’ entire development process here, all under one roof – from the initial sketches to CAD models and eventually the end product.” The key benefit for MSIC’s partners is that they can do all their technical development work on-site – making the process more efficient and helping innovative ideas to become a reality sooner.
The cooperation between DMKey Technologies and IdeaHUB is just one example of how MSIC puts innovative partners in touch with each other. Other examples include development centres for a range of companies (including multinationals), IT experts and companies specializing in robotics – and interest in becoming part of the MSIC community continues to grow. The current MSIC site is now almost full to capacity – this year we have received 42 requests to join, and so far we have only been able to accept 19.
